The Mudslide
Pike lay next to his mother, his fur drenched, and his body shaking with cold and hunger. Jackeb snarled, pulling away from her son and leaving him to shiver as she sat up, glaring at the exit of the hollow in the tree they had made their home in.
It was a normal day for him and his mother, and they had just been wandering the forest when the sudden storm had hit, forcing them to take shelter.
Pike let out a pleading mew, trying to snuggle up close to her, to get even the tiniest taste of comfort and warmth, but each time she bat him away, hissing. He eventually gave up, curling up against the tree and tucking his paws under him.
By now the rain outside became louder and more violent, and Pike began to wonder if it would ever be over.
“Mommy, when’s the storm going to be over?” Pike mewled after an hour or two, his mew full of fear. Outside there was a bright light and a crash as lightning sizzled through the sky.
“You’re lucky I don’t shove you out in it, you worthless brat!” Jackeb spat, her eyes full of hatred.
Pike let out another frightened mew and tensed as more thunder crashed in the sky. A longer time passed, about three hours, until another sound added to the pelting rain and crashes of thunder. Jackeb immediately looked tense, going closer to the exit to get a peek outside. Pike looked up, confused and scared, waiting for any reassurance from his mother as the sound got louder.
What is it..? It sounds like a roaring sound… I wonder if it’s an animal like me? But… I don’t think any animals sound like tha- Pike’s eyes suddenly widened. The ground.. is it moving? His thought was soon followed by a yowl from his mother, and suddenly the tree they were in lurched forward.
“Momma!” pike yowled, getting out of his spot and pressing against his mother, terrified. Infront of them a massive mudslide came into view, a mudslide going down the hill on which the tree rested, the mud, sludge, and rock uprooting the tree. Jackeb gave terrified yowls, pushing herself to the very back of the hollow in the tree. Then- suddenly- CRACK!
Both mother and son gave terrified yowls as the tree became totally uprooted, jolting them both forward as the tree collapsed into the mudslide.
Pike gave out a loud mew as he felt sharp teeth secure around his scruff as Jackeb made a flying leap, just before they both went down with the tree. But it was all in vain, Jackeb not having any solid ground to land on, so, instead, she fell straight into the mudslide, Pike still secure in her jaws.
Immediately they both were pulled under, and Jackeb released Pike to let out a yowl in horror, but her yowl was silenced as mud and sludge gushed into her nostrils and throat. As soon as he felt his mother’s jaws leave his scruff Pike struggled, kicking frantically, not knowing which way was up, and which was down. The horrible feeling seemed to go on forever; until, finally, GASP!
Pike let out a loud mew as he was pushed to the surface, taking frantic gasps of air. “MOMMA!” he yowled, frantically looking for her, but she was nowhere to be found. His yowls were suddenly silenced as he was pulled under once more; though he continued to struggle, debris hitting him, including branches and rocks. At one point he felt as if he were going to be crushed, until once again he broke the surface, immediately gasping, and then frantically grabbing onto a large tree branch.
But as soon as Pike did it rolled over, and he almost lost his grip, until finally he managed to pull himself up onto it. Once he did he frantically looked around, until finally, he spotted something in the distance. A large fallen tree in the mudslide, still holding on by a bit of it’s roots.
Immediately Pike’s adrenalin kicked in, knowing this was his only chance for survival; and it didn’t take long until he leaped from his tree branch and onto the fallen tree, scrabbling frantically until he finally managed to get atop of it.
Immediately he coughed, spitting up mud and rainwater. But there was no time to rest, the tree lurching under him, just about to be pulled into the raging muddy tides. Jolted into reality, he ran, as fast as he could, claws digging into the bark so that he wouldn’t fall.
Then, finally, Pike leaped, then gasping as he was delivered onto soggy, but solid earth. Immediately after he heard a crash as the tree was surrendered into the slide, but he didn’t turn his head to look, full of horror. But, as horrified as he was, he wanted to run away, run as fast as he could. So, though his energy spent, he lifted himself up, half limping and half running.
He had no idea where he was, or where he was going, all he knew was that he wanted to get away, far, far away. So that’s what he did. He ran, until finally his shaking, bruised legs and bleeding paw pads could take him no farther. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was the soft blue outlines of flowers shifting in the rain. The flowers, as he’d soon find out, of the blue meadow.
