Ashenfall slowly padded inside the cave behind Star Falls, suppressing a sob now and again. She would have never thought this morning would be her last as deputy, and she wasn't sure how to feel about it. Everything had happened so fast, and now here she was standing before the Star Pool, about to receive her nine lives. She sat down and stared into the blue depths of the water, which promptly brought back the events of that afternoon back to her mind.
She had been organizing a Sun-high patrol as usual, until a pair of coyotes had broken into camp. There had only been two deaths, one unfortunately being Tidestar. Ashenfall had found his body lying in a shallow nearby stream, barely breathing. No amount of medicine expertise could have saved him, and he died shortly after being found.
Cursing, she swiped at a pebble, knocking it into the water. "IM NOT READY FOR THIS, HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LEAD WILLOWCLAN? I'VE ONLY BEEN DEPUTY FOR 9 MOONS!" She wailed, and laid down in a anxious heap. Looking up, she realized it was moonhigh, and let out an exasperated sigh. "Starclan help me..." she whispered, and lead herself into the surprisingly warm waters of Starpool. Closing her eyes, she drifted into unconsciousness, joining the Starclan cats for her ceremony.
Ashenfall opened her eyes and sat up, and tried to adjust her eyes to her new surroundings. Where am i?... She thought, looking around. "Hello?" Is this Starclan? Before she ask anything else, a voice called from behind her. "Welcome, Ashenfall." The voice echoed. There was something familar about the feminine voice, and she turned around. "Hello?" she mewed. The golden spotted she-cat padded into the light, and stood before Ashenfall. She blinked, "M-mom??" she stammered, "Is that you??" She hadn't seen her mom since she had passed last Leafbare, and now she stood right in front of her. The older she-cat responded quietly, "Yes dear, it's me. I am so proud of you, I knew you would become a great cat someday." She rested her muzzle on Ashenfall's head. "How have you been?? I've missed you so much, I have so much to tell you I-" she cried. Wolfdapple silenced her, "Hush now, It is time for you to receive your first life." she cooed. Ashenfall sat motionless as her mother touched her nose to her forehead. "With this life I give you dedication, use it well to care for your clan until your life is through." Just then, a soft jolt of pain shot through her, making her fur stand on end. Wolfdapple licked her cheek, and padded away. "W-wait!" Ashenfall called, but she had already gone. She looked around, seeing who the next cat would be. A lanky tom walked foward, and smiled at her. "Pebblefur..." She mewed sadly. He was previous deputy that had died not too long ago from a border fight. He pressed his nose into her creamy fur, "With this life I give you courage, use it well to be brave in situations that will call for it. Another ferocious wave of pain riddled her body, leaving her breathless for a moment. Oh Starclan this hurts, how am I supposed to do this seven more times?? Pebblefur padded away, and a white she cat came forward to take his place. Ashen's eyes widened, "Snowflight!" she mewed. The snowy she cat had been her mentor, that had passed away from greencough last Leafbare. The she-cat rested her nose on Ashenfall, "With this life I give you mentoring, use it well to teach the young cats of your clan." Again, she was shocked with an agonizing blow of pain, almost making her fall over. Snowflight smiled, "I'm glad I got to have you as my last apprentice." she mewed, and walked away into the darkness. A fourth cat came foward, he was much younger than the others, and soon recognized him. Oh no... Robinpaw. The reddish apprentice had been her close friend when she was younger, and had fallen into Cat-Swallow river while fooling around with another apprentice. Ashenfall bent down to him and smiled sadly, "Hey buddy..." She could hardly hold back her tears. The little tom touched her head. "With this life, I give you protection, use it well to keep your clanmates safe, even the mischievous apprentices." he mewed, smiling. Pain ran through her body, almost suffocating her. She watched him dissapear into the darkness, and saw a 5th cat come forward. She didn't recognize her at first, but then identified her as the queen who babysat her as a kit while her mother was away. "Rosebloom," she mewed warmly. The dappled she cat pressed her muzzle against her, "With this life I give you patience, use it well to tolerate whatever may come your way without losing your temper. A leader must always have patience." A less painful, tingly feeling swept through her. She dipped her head, and dissapeared. A 6th cat approached her, who she did not recognize. The pretty marbled she cat sat close to her, "I was the Willowclan leader before Tidestar" She mewed before she could ask, "He made a fine choice of deputy, I am proud of him." Amberstar touched her nose to her fur. "With this life I give you trust, always have faith in your clanmates, for they all have faith in you, Ashenfall." A cold shiver shocked her from this life, and she shuddered a bit. The cat bowed, and returned to the shadows. A 7th cat trotted to her, a large tortoiseshell tom, with warm green eyes, she recognized him as Coppershine, one of her close friends that had recently passed from a terrible fall from the Great Willow. A tear fell down her cheek, she wished she could have spent more time with all of the cats here. "With this life, I give you the gift of offering second chances, every cat deserves to prove themselves, even if they have failed once before. Learn form your mistakes, and offer your wisdom to those who may need it." A stinging pain rushed through her, and she yowled slightly from the pain. The tom then pressed against the creamy she-cat, "I miss you." He mewed, and walked away. On of the last couple cats came forward. Ashenstar blinked a few times, trying to make out who the small silhouette was. The small she-cat stepped out of the darkness and into the bright light of the moon. Ashenfalls ears dropped, and she stared at the cat with shock. "F-flowerpaw? Is it really you? She whimpered. The creamy spotted apprentice was none other than her sister. Ashenfall's eyes welled up with warm tears. "You're in Starclan?.." She could hardly speak. She had not seen her sister since the day she fled the camp in a rage at her, and never knew her where she had gone until this day. Her sister padded forward and touched noses with her. "With this life, I give you love, cherish your clanmates, and your kin, no matter what. All of your clan is your family now." A warm sensation pulsed through her, much more gentle than her other lives. The apprentice looked up at her, with sadness and regret. "I'm so sorry, I love you more than you will ever know, and I will always be with you now, as I should have been when I was still alive." She mewed softly, and returned back to the rest of the cats. The last cat came forward, The dark grey and white tom smiled at her, It was Tidestar. "Greetings, my dearest deputy, you are young, but I have no doubt that you will lead this clan well. "With this life, I give you strength, use it well to persevere the hardships and challenges you will face." A fierce pain ripped through her for the last time, and she clenched the ground beneath her until it was over. "I know that you will make me proud, and you will always have Starclan beside you when you need them." "I hail you by your new name, Ashenstar. Your old life is no more. You have now received the nine lives of a leader, and StarClan grants you the guardianship of WillowClan. Defend it well; care for young and old; honor your ancestors and the traditions of the warrior code; live each life with pride and dignity." He mewed. "You have now received all of your lives, you have done well Ashenstar, congratulations." He smiled, and the cats of StarClan started chanting her name. She smiled back, and listened to StarClan's cheer, "Thank you Tidestar, I hope that I can become as great as a leader you were." She mewed. The tom looked at her warmly, "I know that you will be so, so much more than that." "It is time for you to wake now, your clan awaits." He mewed softly. Ashenstar slowly watched all the cats fade, as she started to wake from her dream.
Moments later, she awoke in Starpool again, dazed from what had just happened. She felt stronger than ever, and realized that she now was officially a leader. The responsibilites flooded her mind, but she felt StarClan's presence around her, and knew she could it. I won't let you down, Tidestar. She pulled herself out of the warm water and shook her pelt. The sun was just rising over the mountains as she exited the cave, and she breathed in the morning air. Leafwatcher was standing outside the cave waiting for her. Joining the medicine cat, they started the long trek back to WillowClan camp. "You have to choose a new deputy before moonhigh, you know." The cat mewed to her. She completely forgot she had to choose a deputy, and thought a moment. She had been watching one cat in particular, who was an exemplary choice for the position. "Foxclaw." She mewed with certainty, "Foxclaw shall be the new deputy."
She had been organizing a Sun-high patrol as usual, until a pair of coyotes had broken into camp. There had only been two deaths, one unfortunately being Tidestar.
